Letter – ‘Should have taken the class’

Editor, The Smithfield Times:
I have known for many years that I hampered my educational development when I did not take the class “Understanding the Mysteries of Governmental Decision Making.”
Weekly we cross the Chuckatuck to shop in Smithfield, eat in your great restaurants and read The Smithfield Times. We see developments going up and future plans for more, all of which will increase tax income for the city.
We read about Smithfield’s “taphouse issue.” Years ago, we owned a restaurant and have understanding of the relationships between great costs and thin profits. Applying my own uninformed thinking, it seems the city should consider the little income gained from selling water to the restaurant as opposed to how much tax income will be lost when the restaurant shuts down and jobs are lost, which undoubtedly will occur considering the reality of the numbers involved.
I should have taken the class.
