Letter – Route 10 is a ‘jumbled mess’

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

We’re growing and must take the reins of the aesthetics on Route 10 from St. Luke’s to the Main Street intersection.

How will it look as a whole? Are there specific materials, designs and landscaping that will help us have a “look” that is appealing? Williamsburg has achieved its own look and has strict requirements of developers.

At the present, Route 10 is a jumbled mess of design, lighting and landscaping (or lack thereof). We are fortunate to have the influences of St Luke’s, our historic district and Mr. Luter’s touches around town to begin the blueprint. Special hardscape could be part of the master plan through community fundraising (as an example, Packer or educational icon sculpture at the new roundabout, a very special “Welcome to Smithfield” sign or a pig sculpture at the Route 10 Bypass intersection. Many will have great ideas for these areas).

I’m sure there are others who want to see Smithfield have a cohesive plan for Route 10 aesthetics and not leave it up to the developers of new sections who sometimes do the least that is required of them and without thought to the larger picture.
