275 years ago in 1750, the concept of building a more convenient location for the court system in Isle of Wight County was born. Even though it was a lengthy approval process by the House of Burgesses, a courthouse was built in the small community of Smithfield. For 50 years (1750 to 1800) the 1750 Isle of Wight County Courthouse, once built, housed our local court system and county government.

This year, 275 years later, the building stands representing the story of the American experience. It began its life under British Government control during the colonial period, witnessed the struggles of the revolution here in America, and began its life under the United States Constitution before moving to its present location in 1800.

We want to encourage you to take time to recognize this historic treasure in our community and share with you its story. We encourage you, your family and your friends to visit this unique building during its 275th anniversary. Starting March 1, we opened our doors seven days a week and will remain open through Dec. 31. Sunday through Thursday, our hours are 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays 11 a.m. to 4, and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4. There is “free admission” to the 1750 Courthouse. We believe everyone should have access to this unique story. Plan a visit soon.

To keep the 1750 Isle of Wight County Courthouse story alive, we develop programs, create projects and, most importantly, work hard to preserve this historic treasure.
