A transient Newport News man accused of robbing the Truist Bank in Smithfield at gunpoint in February has been taken into custody.

According to Smithfield police, the Portsmouth Police Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit arrested Tyrone Jefferson Perry Jr. on March 27 on a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant. Following Perry’s arrest, the Smithfield Police Department obtained its own arrest warrant and a search warrant for Perry’s vehicle.

Perry is charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and one count of entering a banking house with intent to commit larceny.

“The Smithfield Police Department appreciates the assistance of the Portsmouth FAU in the apprehension of Perry,” SPD said on its Facebook page. “This case remains under active investigation.”

Police responded to the South Church Street bank just after 2 p.m. as heavy snow from Winter Storm Kingston fell on Smithfield. A bank security camera recorded a then-unidentified man, who police now say is Perry, wearing sunglasses, a black head covering and a reflective orange safety vest. Police say Perry displayed a firearm and fled on foot toward Smithfield Boulevard, a residential area behind the bank, with an unspecified amount of money.

Smithfield Police Lt. William Wooley said the search of Perry’s car did not recover any money but did recover other items. Police would not say how much money was taken from the bank.

Wooley said Perry has six prior non-violent felony convictions. His convictions, according to Newport News Circuit Court records, include guilty pleas in 2006 to felony eluding police, in 2008 to possessing stolen property and in 2012 to stealing a car.

Police said in February that they were investigating the robbery in collaboration with the FBI.

Perry is being held without bond at the Portsmouth City Jail.
