An international hair salon chain is gearing up to open its first Smithfield location.
The town on Feb. 5 issued a business license for a Great Clips at 1305 S. Church St., in a small shopping center being built next to Smithfield’s new Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles office.
The 4,800-square-foot DMV, which broke ground in 2023, opened in June. Warren Sachs, whose KLS Battery Park Development Group owns the land and leases the standalone office to the DMV, broke ground last year on the adjacent 7,200-square-foot shopping center, which is designed to house up to four tenants, though only three are planned at present. The brick building is now largely complete.
A flier distributed last year showed a 1,500-square-foot Great Clips and “1942 Tacos & Tequila,” a Mexican restaurant franchise with locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, as under contract to lease two of the spaces.
Great Clips, which has over 4,400 locations across the United States and Canada, is headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota, and operates 92 Virginia locations, including four in Newport News and three in Suffolk.
