Muriel Elizabeth Malave (Haynes)

Muriel Elizabeth Malave (Haynes) devoted wife, mother and Nana passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and Riverside hospice nurses on 5 April 2025 at age 88.

She is preceded in death by her parents Lucille and Paul Haynes, her sisters Jeanette Chapman and Lois Tapner, her son Wyatt Malave, and grandson Patrick Mckinley. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years Col (Ret) Samuel Malave-Garcia, her devoted daughters Jeanette Richardson (David) and Sandra Richards (Will) and her beloved grandsons Hayden, Jacob, Bryce Richardson, and Wyatt Richards. She is also survived by her special nephew Woody Chapman and many other cousins. She also leaves behind a very special cousin, Margie Crews and best friend Gloria Huthmaker. The family also wishes to give special thanks to the Riverside Hospice Team with a special mention to Melissa Unica her last nurse.

Muriel was born in Newport News, was raised in Smithfield, VA and graduated from Smithfield High School in 1955. She acquired a bachelor’s degree from Christopher Newport College and Certificate to teach K-12. She traveled the world alongside her husband, teaching English to Japanese executives and as a teacher in the Rotterdam American School. She never met a stranger and lived through all tragedies and triumphs with courage and dignity.

A celebration of life will be held at 1pm at the SGI-USA South Buddhist Center at 2078 Nickerson Blvd, Hampton VA 23663. Friends and family may wish to gather at 7 Executive Drive Newport News, VA 23606. Muriel asked that no flowers are needed. Instead, if you wish, make donations to the Virginia Democratic Party.
