A man’s nearly two-hour armed standoff with Smithfield Police on April 18 at Cedar Street Apartments ended without bloodshed.

According to Smithfield Police Lt. William Wooley, officers responded at approximately 10:44 a.m. to a reported domestic assault and found a woman who had been locked outside on a balcony. Wooley said the woman was evacuated, but the incident escalated when a man with a firearm barricaded himself inside the apartment with a 5-month-old child.

The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Remont Massenburg, allegedly threatened law enforcement through messages before and during the incident. Wooley said Smithfield Police negotiators successfully persuaded Masenburg to throw the firearm out of a window.

During those negotiations, a Smithfield Police emergency response team conducted a covert rescue operation, safely removing the 5-month-old, who was unharmed, Wooley said.

Massenburg was taken into custody at 12:39 p.m. without further incident.

Wooley said the 5-month-old is the child of Massenburg and the woman on the balcony.

Wooley said the investigation continues and interviews are still being conducted. Massenburg has been charged with domestic assault, a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail, a fine of $2,500, or both, if convicted.

Wooley said Massenburg was released from police custody after a magistrate decided not to hold him.
