Editor, The Smithfield Times:
Every day, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and contractor partner crews are out on the roads across Hampton Roads — repairing pavement, maintaining bridges, managing tunnels, and operating ferries — to keep you moving safely. With over 10,000 lane miles of roadway spanning nine counties and 11 cities, it’s a big job, and one we take great pride in.
Right now, our district is delivering over $5.5 billion in construction projects to ease congestion, enhance safety and boost the local economy. The benefits of these projects are safer roads, fewer delays and better travel options for you.
We understand that driving through construction zones can be frustrating. But please remember, our crews are often working just feet from moving traffic, and their safety depends on your careful driving.
During National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 21–25), we ask you to “Respect the zone so we all get home.”
Despite strong safety measures, preventable crashes still happen due to distracted driving, speeding or inattention. Staying alert and driving carefully help protect our crews and keep traffic moving smoothly.
When approaching a work zone:
- Slow down — it’s safer for everyone.
- Stay alert — things can change quickly.
- Put your phone away — distractions aren’t worth the risk.
- Drive thoughtfully — your choices protect lives.
On Wednesday, April 23, wear orange for Go Orange Day to honor our crews and commit to safer driving.
Thank you for doing your part to protect our road workers, keep traffic flowing, and help us all get home safely.
