A new telecommunications tower is proposed for land off Scotts Factory Road.

According to a public notice published in the April 23 print edition of The Smithfield Times, Middleburg-based Arcola Towers is proposing a 199-foot-tall monopole in the vicinity of 15562 Scotts Factory Road. The notice sets a 30-day window starting on the publication date for public comments on potential effects on historic properties to be directed to Ashley Walters of Trileaf Corp., an environmental, architecture and engineering firm, by sending mail to 9 Cornerstone Square #3314 Westward, MA 01886, calling 410-853-7128 or emailing a.walters@trileaf.com.

The address of the proposed tower corresponds to a 125-acre farm and residence located roughly a quarter-mile from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Isle of Wight County Community Development Director Amy Ring, when asked if the proposed tower would require approval by the county’s Planning Commission or Board of Supervisors, said she was unaware of the project prior to being provided with a copy of the advertisement.

The height of the proposed tower would be just below the 200-foot threshold where the Federal Aviation Administration would require it be lighted to warn passing aircraft.

According to Arcola’s website, the company operates over 1,300 towers and pre-leased locations across the United States. Its partner wireless carriers include AT&T, Dish Network, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon.
