Letter – Leave Ashby alone

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

There is evidently a proposed development off Route 17 between Brewers Neck Boulevard and the Carrollton Station.

The developers want to tie a road into our Ashby community at the end of Britt Way with the excuse that they need the access to the traffic light that exits the entrance to the Ashby community on to Route 17/Carrollton Boulevard. We have had our one-way-in, one-way-out community for over 27 years and really don’t want it to be changed or overwhelmed with the extra traffic.

There is no reason the developer can’t tie into Deep Bottom Road. That would give the residents a way to access Route 17 South and Brewers Neck that would take them to Route 17 North or Brewers Neck toward Smithfield and Suffolk. The stoplight should not be relevant!

There are nine crossover locations, ranging from small to very large communities, on Route 17 South that do not have stoplights: Manor Drive, Sugar Hill, Laurelwood Drive, Route 1920 to Muddy Cove, Route 1909, Upton Place, Clubhouse Drive, Governors Point and Bennetts Creek Landing Road.

The other three that go north are Deep Bottom Drive, between Ashby and Brewers Neck Road; Channell Way coming out of the new large development on the right at Brewers Neck; and Northgate Drive going into the townhouses just before the new dollar store.

These 12 obviously have been operating just fine without a stoplight and haven’t been forced into agreeing to have one.

So why should we? Say no to the tie-in!
