Police: Three-vehicle crash outside Windsor involved IW deputy

Virginia State Police say an overnight three-vehicle crash at the outskirts of Windsor involved an Isle of Wight County sheriff’s deputy.

Shortly before midnight on May 20, a male driver of a 2000 GMC Sonoma was traveling south without headlights on Route 258 where it intersects Five Forks Road and was struck from behind by an on-duty deputy driving a 2022 Ford Explorer patrol car, VSP stated in a news release.

Shortly after the initial crash, the driver of a 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling north on Route 258 attempted to avoid the crash scene and ran into a ditch, causing the tractor-trailer to overturn on its side. All three drivers were transported from the scene with non-life-threatening injuries.

Capt. Tommy Potter, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, identified the officer as Deputy Tyler Ezzell. He said Ezzell had been released from a hospital with minor injuries as of the afternoon on May 21.

Potter said the patrol vehicle “sustained heavy damage.”

“At this time, we are waiting for an insurance adjuster to evaluate the vehicle,” Potter said.

The tractor-trailer was loaded with 44,000 pounds of ham, the unloading of which was the cause of an hours-long road closure at the intersection. The intersection had reopened as of 9:17 a.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s 511 traffic-monitoring website.
