Letter – In honor of the fallen

Editor, The Smithfield Times:
Beneath the skies so vast and blue,
We bow our heads in reverent view.
For those who marched through fire and rain,
And paid the price in silent pain.
They gave their all, both young and brave,
Now rest beneath the flags that wave.
Each name a story, proud and true,
Of love for country, me and you.
The drums are still, the guns are gone,
But freedom’s light keeps shining on.
Their voices echo in the breeze,
Through whispering oaks and swaying trees.
We light the torch, we hold it high,
For every soul who dared to die.
This day we stand, both proud and torn,
In memory of those war-worn.
No wreath or speech can quite repay,
The debt we owe them all today.
But in our hearts, they still remain—
Our fallen heroes, free from pain.
