A Carrollton woman and her boyfriend are facing multiple felony child abuse charges after a 19-month-old was taken to a hospital with severe injuries.
The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release it had arrested Ifrika Aniya Richardson, 23, of the Nest on 17 apartment complex in the 700 block of Chickahominy Loop, and her live-in boyfriend, Jias LaTwan Wilson-Booker, 24, on May 29 after deputies were notified by medical staff at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk that the child had been admitted with “multiple injuries” consistent with “prolonged physical abuse and neglect.”
Capt. Tommy Potter, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said the child was taken to CHKD after having been left with a relative who became concerned and took the child to an urgent care center. The Sheriff’s Office said a joint investigation with the Isle of Wight County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, Department of Social Services and CHKD medical personnel “determined that the child was in the care of the child’s mother and her live-in boyfriend at the time the injuries occurred.”
Richardson and Wilson-Booker are each being held at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail in Suffolk without bond. According to jail records, Richardson faces three felony charges, including “malicious assault – victim severely injured,” as well as a Class 1 misdemeanor charge of simple assault against a family member.
Wilson-Booker also faces three felony charges, including “stab, cut or wound with malicious intent – victim permanently impaired,” and the same Class 1 misdemeanor charge.
Following a lengthy hospital stay, the child has been released into the custody of the Isle of Wight County Department of Social Services, which is providing care and supervision.
“This is a heartbreaking case that no child should ever have to endure,” Sheriff James Clarke jr. said in the news release. “We are committed to pursuing justice on behalf of this young victim and are grateful to CHKD, the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, Social Services, and our investigative team for their swift and coordinated response.”
