Carrollton Elementary students were sent home after the school went into lockdown for just over an hour.

The school, in a message to parents, said Carrollton had “received a call reporting a threat to the school” the afternoon of June 2. Isle of Wight County Schools contacted the county Sheriff’s Office, which dispatched several deputies to the site.

IWCS spokeswoman Lynn Briggs said the lockdown was lifted around 4 p.m. after deputies found nothing of concern during a sweep of the building.

The message to parents said “out of an abundance of caution” law enforcement would be “conducting a sweep of the building using canine detection dogs” and that no parents or visitors would be allowed in or out of the building during the sweep.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a series of Facebook posts that there is “not an active threat at this time” and that parents could stage at Sweet Haven Church of God at Brewers Neck Blvd. while waiting for information on how to reunite with their children. In an update shortly before 4 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said students who ride buses will be riding their bus home.

The threat is the second in less than a month against one of the county’s schools. A previous threat made May 14 resulted in outdoor activities being canceled at Westside Elementary the following day. That threat too was deemed non-credible after school staff and law enforcement investigated.
