Bon Secours: Expanding Access to Quality, Compassionate Health Care in Hampton Roads

Published 5:59 pm Tuesday, June 17, 2025

Access to primary care is the foundation of a healthier community. Whether it’s an annual checkup, managing diabetes, or preventing illness altogether, it starts with preventative, primary care.

We’re seeing a real need for more access to primary care across Hampton Roads, especially in our rural communities. Across our community, new patients are facing long wait times just to establish care with a provider and in many cases, they’re having to travel to be seen.

At Bon Secours, we recognize this is a pressing challenge, and we’re taking a comprehensive approach to expand access and meet patients where they are.

Bon Secours currently operates 16 primary care clinics across our Hampton Roads market, in addition to four hospitals: Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth, Bon Secours Southampton Medical Center in Franklin, and our newest facility, Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center in Suffolk, which  opened in May.

“Expanding primary care access is critical to improving health outcomes across Hampton Roads,” said Dr. Anand Kapur, regional medical director for primary care, Bon Secours – Hampton Roads. “With the opening of Harbour View Medical Center, we’re not only increasing the availability of hospital and specialty services in North Suffolk, but we’re also strengthening our primary care network by ensuring patients can get timely care close to home.”

For residents in North Suffolk, the new Harbour View Medical Center brings hospital, surgical, and acute care services right to their neighborhood, improving convenience and timely access.

Our primary care network — including Bon Secours Suffolk Primary Care, Harbour View Family Practice, and Nansemond Suffolk Family Practice — offer everything from routine checkups to chronic disease management, while focusing on building long-term relationships with patients.

We aim to see new patients within seven days across our medical group, and aim to address urgent needs within 24 to 48 hours.

As we’ve grown to better meet the needs of our community over the past few years, we’ve added 43 new primary care providers. At Harbour View Medical Center alone, we’ve hired approximately 100 new associates to support our North Suffolk community.

At Bon Secours, we recognize the factors that drive individual and community health extend far beyond the walls of our hospitals and clinics. Health is shaped by more than just doctors’ visits, it’s shaped by things like food access, housing, and transportation. That’s why we have social workers, care coordinators, and our community health hub working together to help address those social drivers of health in the communities we serve

It’s part of our mission to bring good help to those in need, and that means meeting people where they are, not just physically, but in every aspect of their health journey.
