Fireworks, local Independence Day events planned June 28 through July 5

Isle of Wight and Surry counties, and the towns of Smithfield and Windsor, have three days of fireworks planned to celebrate Independence Day.
The festivities begin June 28 with Windsor’s “Summer Salute to Freedom,” which will kick off at 3:30 p.m. that day at the Wesley F. Garris Event Park at 18 Duke St. Musical guests Joey Parade will perform from 4-5 p.m., followed by The Phun Doctors from 6-9 p.m. Food trucks, craft vendors and a kids zone including bounce houses, face painting and a rock climbing wall supplied by the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office will be on site. The town’s annual Greg Willis Cruise-In will begin at 5 p.m. Fireworks will begin after 9:30 p.m.
Smithfield’s festivities are scheduled for July 2, starting with a reading of the Declaration of Independence at the 1750 Isle of Wight Courthouse at 130 Main St. at 7 p.m. Smithfield will host its own fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.
The display will shoot off from Clontz Park with good viewing from the Smithfield Station restaurant and marina and all along the Pagan River.
The Cypress Creek Bridge will not be open to foot traffic this year due to the construction that has been in progress since January 2024. The bridge repairs are set to be complete by this fall.
Smithfield’s American Legion Post 49 will allow parking in its lot at 818 S. Church St. for those wanting to view the fireworks from the south side. The lot will open at 7 p.m. A $5 donation is requested.
Isle of Wight County will host its own fireworks display on July 3 at the fairgrounds at Heritage Park, located at 21311 Courthouse Highway. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Live music by Band-It, a local variety band that plays classic and new country, classic rock and Southern rock, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Fireworks by Francisco Displays will begin at 9:30 p.m.
The fairgrounds will include food vendors and a kid zone including bounce houses, games activities and face-painting.
Surry County will also host a fireworks display on July 3 at its Parks and Recreation Center, 205 Enos Farm Drive, with craft and food vendors on site beginning at 4 p.m.
On July 4, the Peninsula Concert Band will perform patriotic tunes on the Main Street Square stage outside The Smithfield Times office at 7:30 p.m. as part of the weekly Downtown Summer Concert Series.
On July 5, the American Legion will host a flag retirement ceremony, in which torn and faded American flags are respectfully burned on a pyre. The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will be held at 818 South Church St. at noon with lunch following. Flags for retirement can be brought to the ceremony or dropped off anytime at the Post in the red, white and blue mailbox at the Post parking lot.
