- Smithfield Foods' global headquarters is on the banks of the Pagan River.
Smithfield’s Town Council was briefed earlier this month on a planned expansion of corporate jobs at Smithfield Foods’ headquarters in town.
According to reporting by the Virginian Pilot, Foods will close two regional offices in Illinois and Missouri and relocate roughly 115 corporate jobs to its headquarters in Smithfield by the end of 2026.
According to the Pilot, the company announced the move in a news release. That release wasn’t available via the company’s online press room or its investor relations website as of June 23.
Vice President of Corporate Affairs Jim Monroe and other spokespeople for Smithfield Foods did not immediately respond to the Times’ requests for comments.
The jobs reportedly include finance, procurement, human resources, information technology and other support positions. The company reportedly hasn’t determined how many employees will relocate or how many positions will be open to new hires.
Smithfield Mayor Mike Smith said he was “excited” about the news.
“We will make these people feel at home and look forward to their arrival,” Smith told the Times.
Monroe “shared this information with some town leadership several weeks ago and it is great to see this information made public,” Vice Mayor Bill Harris told the Times. “Mr. Monroe also shared with those of us at that meeting that Smithfield Foods is ‘going nowhere’ and the announcement of the moving of these corporate jobs here to (Smithfield Foods’) headquarters certainly reinforces that. All of this is very good news for the town of Smithfield.”
“It’s very encouraging news in terms of economic structure that we have right now. It will only encourage future growth in the area,” said Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors Chairman Don Rosie.
Times in a March interview. Foods has roughly 40,000 employees worldwide and employs about 3,000 people locally between its headquarters, Innovation Center and the North Church Street meatpacking plant. There are between 1,000 to 1,100 corporate jobs based within the town borders between the Commerce Street headquarters campus and Foods’ satellite office in the Smithfield Square shopping center anchored by Food Lion, Foods’ CEO Shane Smith told the Times in a March interview. The additional 115 jobs would reflect a roughly 10% to 20% increase in town-based corporate positions.
The announced relocation comes five months after the debut of Foods’ United States stock listing on the Nasdaq Global Select Market. On Jan. 28 Foods announced its initial public offering of 26 million, or roughly 7%, of its shares, valued collectively at just over $520 million.
Trading opened Jan. 28 at a price of $20 per share under the ticker symbol SFD. Foods’ stock was trading at $23.61 per share as of the 4 p.m. close of business on June 23.
