Editor, The Smithfield Times:
In Virginia, it is illegal to possess, use, store, sale or handle any firework that explodes, rises into the air or travels laterally, or to fire projectiles into the air. However, fireworks that stay on the ground, like pinwheels, fountains and sparklers, are legal through the state code.
It’s getting that time of year when people lose their minds, shooting off illegal fireworks in the Town of Smithfield. There are numerous pet owners in the town limits, not to mention many veterans who suffer from PTSD who really suffer when individuals shoot off fireworks until the wee hours of the morning on holidays.
The annual town fireworks celebrations are not the problem. It’s individuals who shoot off the fireworks. This is an issue that needs to be addressed before it starts.
