John William Wise Sr., formerly of Stony Creek, passed away Monday, Sept. 18, 2017 at the Battlefield Park Heath Care Center.  He was born in Isle of Wight County to the late Emmett and Susie Bradshaw Wise.  He was preceded in death by his son, John W. “Johnnie” Wise Jr.; brother, James E. Wise and a son-in-law, Mitchell Harris.  

Mr. Wise was a member of Whiteheads Grove Baptist Church in Smithfield.  He was veteran of the United States Marines, a retired diesel mechanic from Bishop Settle Construction Company and a member of Sussex Community Hunt Club.  

Mr. Wise is survived by his wife, Mary L. Wise; daughter of John Wise, Darlene Wise Harris (mother Dianne W. Cook); son of Mary and John Wise, Anthony Wise and daughter-in-law, Shannon; grandchildren, Milton E. Wise, John Michael Wise, Jessica Dianne Wise, MaKayla Elizabeth Wise, Shelbi Marie Wise, Gavrielle Janae Wise and Anissa Brooke Wise; great-grandchildren, Braxton James Sheffield and Olivia Ray Highsmith; two sisters, Louise Wise Bailey Bennett and Betty Sue Wise Burris; three brothers, Francis Wise, David Wise and Jessie Wise and numerous nieces and nephews.  

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, 6329 Mill Swamp Road, Ivor, with the Rev. Russell O. Leonard officiating.  The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 22, from 10-11 a.m. at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road, Petersburg.

The Rev. Sarah C. Hall of Smithfield passed away on Sept. 16, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Deacon Frank and Eunice Clark Hall. She is survived by two nieces, LaKeisha and Monica Hall and nephew, KeShawn Hall; three brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 21, 4-7 p.m. at Shivers Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 22, noon, at Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Arlayne Honeycutt Aycock, 77, of Smithfield, passed away Sept. 7, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Troy and Mamie Honeycutt.

Arlayne is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Aycock Wright; son and daughter-in-law, Chip and Victoria Aycock; five grandchildren, one great grandchild; and brother, Bobby Honeycutt.

Donald Elwood Soles Sr. 77, of Smithfield went to be with his Lord and Savior, on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017 in Riverside Hospital.  Donald was born the son of the late Vonnie Elwood Soles and Ruby Letha Cox Soles.  He began his career in the flooring business in Wilmington, N.C. with Sherwin Williams and went on to open his own flooring company, Tidewater Floors Inc., in Chesapeake. Donald was a direct descendant of George Soule and a member of the Virginia Mayflower Society and a member of Smithfield Baptist Church.  Donald is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joyce Cathey Soles.  His sons Donald Elwood Soles Jr. M.D. and his wife Nancy, and Jeffrey Keith Soles and his wife Deanna; five grandchildren, Donald Elwood Soles III, Andrea Leigh Soles, Elizabeth Caroline Soles, Loyal Douglas Soles and Bennett Nolan Soles.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. in Smithfield Baptist Church with burial to follow in St. Luke’s Memorial Park cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Little’s Funeral Home on Friday Sept. 8, 6 - 7:30 p.m.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Lung Association, or Smithfield Baptist Church, 100 Wainwright Drive, Smithfield, VA 23430.  Online condolences may be registered at

WINDSOR — Alfred "Fred" Duncan Jr., 61, of Windsor was called home to be with his Savior unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017. Fred was a very active member of Mill Swamp Baptist Church and a well-known member of his community. Fred always enjoyed life to its fullest and loved photography, reading his Bible, spending time with his family and camping at the river.

In addition to close friends and loved ones, Fred was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Dr. Alfred J. Duncan Sr. and Thaddia Bell Duncan; as well as a sister, Karen Duncan Olin.

 He is survived by his brothers, Mark Duncan and Randy Olin; nieces and nephews, Amber, Robbie, R.J. and Jacob Wells, Kristin and Peyton Kessinger and Ashlynn Lane. 
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 6 at Mill Swamp Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
