Foods and Smithfield swapping properties

By Abby Proch

Staff writer

The town of Smithfield and Smithfield Foods have agreed to swap properties with one another.
The town and Smithfield Foods have traded the town’s 1.86-acre grass field between Food’s headquarters and The Smithfield Center for the V.W. Joyner property at 315 Main St., next to the Visitors Center.
The Smithfield Town Council held a public hearing on the property swap and approved it at its monthly meeting on Aug. 5.
The Joyner property includes a small building now occupied by “When Pigs Fly … Magic Happens,” and before that the town manger’s office, and stretch of sloping grass called Joyner Field.
The plot is just shy of one acre.
