My name is Morgan Bailey. I am candidate Michael Bailey’s brother. I am a resident of Atlanta Georgia, however, I still call Surry County home, as I own land and pay taxes. The Aug. 12 edition of The Smithfield Times featured a letter by Raynard Shears, about the candidates running for Sheriff in Surry County, I take issue with the statement Mr. Shears made reference a “questionable” motorcycle accident. There is nothing questionable about the facts of the thoroughly investigated case. Fact is, Michael Bailey was cleared by Surry County Sheriff Clayton, Virginia State Police and former Commonwealth Attorney of Isle of Wight County, Wayne Farmer. Those three entities conducted a thorough investigation and cleared Michael Bailey of any wrongdoing- a fact and not questionable!

I believe incidents candidate Carlos Turner has been involved in are questionable.

He totaled two patrol cars in five years while employed with Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, and the Daily Progress Newspaper reported he was released from Albemarle County Police Department because of a questionable drug and alcohol case.

The Aug. 26 edition of the Sussex-Surry Dispatch article by Sussex County Sheriff Bell listed awards in the following categories of Leadership: Officer of the Year, Most Traffic Summons Issued, Most DUI Arrests, Most Drug Arrests, given to his Deputies for a job well done. Carlos Turner was not among the listed.

Some people forget who helps them and always find a way to criticize as Carlos Turner and Raynard Shears have proven. Carlos Turner forgot that Sheriff Clayton hired him, giving him a second chance after being released from Albemarle County Police Department. Raynard Shears forgot who opened the door for him to get his current job at the Norfolk Airport.

Surry County is deserving of a Sheriff who is experienced and committed to this community. Elect Michael U. Bailey for Sheriff of Surry County!
