Supporting McCarty

We support William McCarty for the Board of Supervisors position for the Newport district. We became acquainted with Coach Mac several years ago when he volunteered as a football coach at Smithfield High School. Since then he has continued to volunteer at the high school; in athletics, choir performances or community events.

This is why we support him. He is actively involved in our community. We are both actively involved in the SABC — the Smithfield Athletic Booster Club. Since our sons started playing high school sports we have been appalled at the conditions of the athletic facilities. We need someone on the Board who is aware of those conditions and the appearance of neglect of some of those facilities. The Values Statement for the county reads: “To sustain Isle of Wight County’s stature as a community of CHOICE for people, families and businesses alike while preserving and protecting our rural heritage, our bountiful mix of natural resources and our natural beauty for present and future generations.”

We chose this county for those very reasons. Candidate McCarty is aware of the issues in this county. He has a vested interest in what goes on in the schools as he has school-age children. Do our current Board of Supervisors have that close a connection to our schools? We need a Board of Supervisors that will strive to make this a community of choice for families. We agree that it is important to protect our rural heritage but we don’t need to live in the past. We need someone on the Board of Supervisors that has a vision for the future but also a connection to the present. We need to elect William McCarty.
