Another Souper Saturday has come and gone. Seeing the fellowship among the volunteers and those who come to eat is definitely worth the work it takes to get ready for it. We had great participation this year, as usual, from citizens who made soup and desserts. Thank you to all! The turnout to “stuff” ham rolls on Friday night was amazing — at least 50 people. To Marty Delk, “thank you” for slicing over 150 pounds of ham on Friday morning!

There are so many people to thank and too many to name them all. I do want to mention the restaurants who so willingly made one or two pots of soup: Main Street Café, SISTAS, The Cockeyed Rooster, Smithfield Inn, Smithfield Station, Smithfield Bakery and Taste of Smithfield. I do not know the final total because donations are still being received. All profit made goes to the Fuel Assistance Program of Isle of Wight County to help those who need.

Trinity United Methodist Church has freely opened the doors for us for over 20 years and we are so grateful to them.

This is one of the greatest community events in Smithfield. Over 30 churches participate — all denominations, all races, all ages! If you ever have any doubt that our community will continue as a wonderful place to live, just come watch our youth on Souper Saturday. They are such a major part of this event.

Chris Lawrence will be Chairman of Souper Saturday next year. I know you will support her as you have supported me. It has been such a pleasure! Thank you to all.
