George Edward Wyatt Sr.

BATTERY PARK — George Edward Wyatt Sr., 92, passed away at his son’s home in Homer, Georgia, Saturday, March 19, 2016.  Born at home in Battery Park on Jan. 18, 1924, his parents were the late Guy Smith and Marion Minga Wyatt. 

A U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, George served on the ship number DD-428, Charles F. Hughes.  He was a Master Mason in the Smithfield Union Lodge #18, had been a Mason for over 50 years, and was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church.  George retired from NASA and worked there before and after WWII when it was NACA and worked with the first 14 original astronauts.  He was a long-time resident of Phoebus and Rescue.  

Preceded in death by his wife, Doris Gerard Wyatt in 2005, he is survived by his sons, George Edward “Buddy” Wyatt Jr. and his wife, Judy Raulerson, and James Guy Wyatt and his wife, Janet N. Wyatt; grandchildren, Lori Wyatt de la Reza, Nicole Wyatt Williams (Nikki), Guy Cofer Wyatt and Melissa Wyatt Bowen; and five great-grandchildren.

Family and friends will gather for visitation Tuesday, March 22, 6 – 7:30 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home in Carrollton.  A graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 23, 10 a.m., in the Battery Park cemetery with Charles Lawhorne officiating, with Navy honors.

The family extends special thanks to his caretakers Nicole Robinson, CNA, Diana Ronci, RN, and the hospice healthcare workers.  The family suggests memorial contributions to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 97, Smithfield, VA  23431.
