Elizabeth Drewery Powell

WINDSOR — Elizabeth Drewery Powell, 93, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016. Elizabeth was born Nov. 14, 1922, the daughter of the late Eddie Lee and Caroline Mumford Drewery. She had been a lifelong resident of Isle of Wight County.
In addition to her parents, Elizabeth is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Tom Powell Jr. and a sister, Edna Drewery Newman. She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Teddy Seward Powell and his wife, Ellen, and Tony Ray Powell; her grandson, Kevin Drewery Powell; her brother, A. Frank Drewery; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
Elizabeth will be remembered for the love, care and knowledge she nurtured the preschool classes at Isle of Wight Academy, and as a bus driver safely transporting children to and from the classroom and home. She served as choir director of Central Hill Baptist Church for more than 40 years, was a member of the Ruth Bible class, and took part in the Woman’s Missionary Union group. Elizabeth was a lifelong, passionate musician. She, along with her brother, Frank, would often sing together at funerals and weddings in the local area.
Family and friends will gather for visitation Wednesday, May 25, 10:30 a.m., followed by a service celebrating Elizabeth’s life at noon in Central Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roger Johnson and the Rev. Dr. Jarvis Hearn officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Following the committal service, a reception will be prepared in the family’s honor in the church social hall.
