BATTERY PARK — Jean Collins Kempton, 79, passed away on Friday, June 17, 2016 in a local hospital. She was born on June 7, 1937 in Newport News to the late Elwood and Ruth Collins; and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Smithfield. Jean loved reading, shopping and cooking; but most of all, she loved just spending time with her grandchildren and great grandson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lee Kempton Jr. and two brothers, Wayne and Ronald Collins.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan M. Bowab; two sons, Roy Neill Kempton and Mark Lee Kempton and his wife Norma; eight grandchildren, Nicole Kempton, Benjamin Bowab, Marlena Passante, Casey Kempton, Joshua Kempton, Erika Kempton, Matthew Bowab and Tyler Tadlock; a great-grandson Noah; a sister, Edith Jones; and a brother, Nelson Collins. 

A memorial service was held June 20 in Calvary Baptist Church in Smithfield. Burial was in the Battery Park cemetery. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel handled the arrangements.
