Fred Walker Callis

SUFFOLK — Fred Walker Callis, 71, passed away July 5, 2016. Born April 13, 1945 in Portsmouth, he was preceded in death by his parents, Sam L. and Jessie H. Callis, and daughter-in-law, Doreen Hodges. 

He was a Vietnam War Army veteran with two purple hearts. Upon retirement from the military, he returned to school and got his degree in architecture. He was lifetime member of the Driver Volunteer Fire Department, Gates County Hunt Club, Woodman of the World, and Norfolk County Anglers Club. He designed the Driver Volunteer Fire Department on Bennett’s Pasture Road. He was someone that had to always have some project to work on. He loved fishing and hunting and would go as often as he could. 

Fred is survived by his wife Eva C. Callis; two sons, Stephan Callis and wife Lisa Zirk Callis, and Fred Junior Callis; three brothers, Whitlow W. Callis and wife Sue of Willard, N.C., William H. Callis and wife Brenda of Chesapeake, and George S. Callis and wife Susan of Suffolk; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
A funeral will be held on Monday, July 11, 1 p.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk, with the Rev. Ryan Brice. Burial with military honors will follow at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veterans Cemetery at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, July 10, from 7-9 p..m.
