Joseph Stuart Johnson

Joseph Stuart Johnson, another member of the “Greatest Generation” passed away Friday, March 3, 2017, at the age of 92.  Stuart was a Christmas baby born to Mattie Walker and Elijah Johnson of Burkesville on Dec 25, 1924.

A veteran of World War II, Stuart served on Navy ships around the world.  He then went to college on the GI Bill.  He retired from NASA after 33 years, then worked at Busch Gardens for most of the next 20 years, so all the kids could have “free” tickets to the park.

He and Jean Futrell Johnson, his wife of 47 years, blended their families and include six children, Deborah Konack (Rick), Kathy Schikevitz (Ron), Martin Johnson(dec’d Oct. 2016), Russell Blackwood (Heidi), Lynn Cole (Stan) and Robyn Ness (David); 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A service celebrating Stuart’s life will be held Saturday, March 11, 11 a.m., in Smithfield Baptist Church, followed by a reception.  Burial will be private
