Harold Corbett Lawrence Sr.

Harold Corbett Lawrence Sr. passed away at his home with his family by his side in Smithfield, Friday, April 28, 2017 at the age of 86.

Harold is predeceased by his parents, Harold Austin Lawrence and Maud Corbett Lawrence Beatty and his first wife, Constance Bullock Lawrence.

Harold is survived by his loving wife, Lorena Baker Lawrence of 43 years. Harold is lovingly remembered by his children, Harold Corbett Lawrence Jr. (Janis) of Raleigh, N.C., Dianne Lawrence Cheek of Surry, Kathryn Dashiell Day (Dave) of Richmond, and Nancy Dashiell Manly (Bo) of Key West, Fla.; his grandchildren, Jackson and Julie Lawrence, Sarah Grace Cheek and Alex Day; his brother, James Alfred Lawrence (Mary Ann); his step-sister Josephine Beatty Chadwick (George); and all of his nieces and nephews.

Harold was born in New York City, N.Y. on July 3, 1930 and grew up in Little Rock and Dillion, S.C. He graduated from Dillion High School in 1947. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State College in 1956. He was a mechanical test engineer at the Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News for 37 years.

Harold enjoyed time with his family, traveling, hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening and NASCAR racing. He was in the Smithfield Rotary and received the Paul Harris Award. He served as the chairman of the Smithfield Board of Zoning Appeals. He was a member of the Smithfield American Legion and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Smithfield and a past Vestry member.

The memorial service, followed by reception and visitation, will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 111 South Church St., Smithfield on Tuesday, May 2 at 11 a.m.
