Carol Smith Saunders, 72 of Smithfield, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side.  Carol was born in Newport News, the daughter of Capt. Charles Thomas Smith and Marguerite Weaver Smith. 

Carol retired from Newport News Shipbuilding Credit Union. In retirement she enjoyed spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren, who were the love of her life.

Carol is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert F. (Bob) Saunders; her son Robert F. (Rob) Saunders Jr. and his wife Heather; and two grandchildren, Keegan and Easton Saunders.  She is also survived by her mother, Marguerite Weaver Smith; and two sisters, Bonnie Gay Smith and Rebecca S. Woods and her husband, Fletcher.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday Aug. 8, from 6 – 7 p.m. at Little’s Funeral Home, Smithfield followed by a memorial service at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol’s honor may be made to The Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters at www.chkd.org.
