Barbara Spencer Simmerman

On Aug. 24, 2017, Barbara Spencer Simmerman was called home to be with her Lord at the age of 82 years.  She was born in Surry, the daughter of the late Clarence and Dorothy Grubbs.  She was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. John W. Spencer; and son, David Spencer.  Barbara served as a pianist at several local churches, playing for over 42 years.  She also formerly worked as a librarian for the Blackwater Regional Library.  She was a member of Maranatha Southern Baptist Church where she served as pianist and Sunday school director.   

Barbara is survived by her children, Susie Rogers (Kenny), Beverly A. “Buz” Seward III, Robin Gynn (Harold), Martha Newsome (Clarence), Dorothy Murray, Linda Tuck (Mike), Elizabeth Leonard, Anthony Seward (Lisa), Jimmy Spencer; daughter-in-law, Caroline Spencer; 22 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; sister, Carol Andrews; brother, D. Michael Grubbs; several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Aug. 26, at Maranatha Southern Baptist Church with the Rev. Clyde Alderman officiating.  Burial followed at Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery.
