John William Wise Sr.

John William Wise Sr., formerly of Stony Creek, passed away Monday, Sept. 18, 2017 at the Battlefield Park Heath Care Center.  He was born in Isle of Wight County to the late Emmett and Susie Bradshaw Wise.  He was preceded in death by his son, John W. “Johnnie” Wise Jr.; brother, James E. Wise and a son-in-law, Mitchell Harris.  

Mr. Wise was a member of Whiteheads Grove Baptist Church in Smithfield.  He was veteran of the United States Marines, a retired diesel mechanic from Bishop Settle Construction Company and a member of Sussex Community Hunt Club.  

Mr. Wise is survived by his wife, Mary L. Wise; daughter of John Wise, Darlene Wise Harris (mother Dianne W. Cook); son of Mary and John Wise, Anthony Wise and daughter-in-law, Shannon; grandchildren, Milton E. Wise, John Michael Wise, Jessica Dianne Wise, MaKayla Elizabeth Wise, Shelbi Marie Wise, Gavrielle Janae Wise and Anissa Brooke Wise; great-grandchildren, Braxton James Sheffield and Olivia Ray Highsmith; two sisters, Louise Wise Bailey Bennett and Betty Sue Wise Burris; three brothers, Francis Wise, David Wise and Jessie Wise and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, 6329 Mill Swamp Road, Ivor, with the Rev. Russell O. Leonard officiating.  The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 22, from 10-11 a.m. at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road, Petersburg.
