Mildred Strawn Cofield

WINDSOR — Mildred Strawn Cofield, 88, passed away Oct. 9, 2017 in Consulate Nursing Center in Windsor. Mildred was the daughter of the late Luther O. and Claudia Strawn Thomas. In addition to her parents, Mildred was predeceased by her brother, Dave Glenn Strawn. 

Cherishing her memory are two sons, H.P. “Trip” Cofield III (Melissa) and Garry S. Cofield (Rita); a brother, Jerry Strawn (Adlevia); and three grandchildren, Meredith C. Cheng (Charles), Joshua D. Cofield and Ryan M. Cofield. 

Mildred graduated from McLeod School of Nursing as a registered nurse and was a member of the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corp during WWII. She retired from Maryview Hospital as a head nurse, and concluded her career with a local general practitioner, Dr. Phillip Thomas. Mildred was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church, taught the high school Sunday school class, was a member of the United Methodist Women and the church choir. As a two-time breast cancer survivor, she was active with Relay for Life. 
       A life celebration service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 13, at Woodland UMC with the Rev. Amanda Newman and the Rev. Robert Cofield Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 – 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St. Suffolk. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association Southeastern Virginia, or to Woodland UMC Blachford-Raveling Scholarship Fund.
