Mildred Satterfield Mayes

Mildred Satterfield Mayes, 91, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2017 in her Smithfield home. She was the daughter of the late John P. Satterfield and Ethel Busby Satterfield Elving. 

She was born in Cradock on Jan. 15, 1926 and attended Portsmouth Public Schools. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, class of 1942, at the age of 16. 

Mildred worked for Dr. W. Curtis Outten as a dental assistant. She was married to the love of her life, Thomas B. Mayes for 67 years. She had one son, Thomas Lee Spencer Mayes, whom she adored.

She was very proud of her ancestry. She was a member of the Jamestowne Society. Her 10th great grandfather, Francis Clements, was a member of the House of Burgess, serving Surry County, as well as their Clerk of County Court form 1697 – 1708. 

She was a devout Episcopalian and woman of faith. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched, above all her surviving son, Tom. 

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Oct. 21, 3 p.m. at Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. Les Ferguson, clergy of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Suffolk. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Wounded Warriors. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com
