Doris Harpine Hurst

Doris Harpine Hurst, 81, of Smithfield, passed away on Oct. 26, 2017. Born on Jan. 31, 1936 in Staunton, she was the daughter of the late Harold S. and Elizabeth P. Harpine. She was predeceased by a sister, Betty Boggs of Hampton, and a brother, Harold David Harpine of San Francisco, Calif. 

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Donald; her two children, Karen Norman (Tim) and Michael (Rick) Hurst (Sally); and six grandchildren, Matt, Palmer, Spencer, Sarah, Jacob and Emily. Doris was a 1954 graduate of Newport News High School. In 1966, her father opened Hilton Frame Shop in Newport News and Doris took over the operation of the business upon his death in 1982. She continued running the business until September 2016, closing the shop when she reached the age of 80.

Through the years, Doris created many of the costumes for several local community theatre groups including Smithfield Little Theatre, Peninsula Community Theatre, and Poquoson Little Theatre. She also had a knack for attracting stray dogs and cats. The family will receive friends at Little’s Funeral Home, Smithfield, on Thursday, Nov. 2, 6 – 7 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 7 p.m.  Burial will be at a later date in Staunton.
