Richard Theodore “Ted” Martin, 84, of Smithfield, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017 with his wife of 61 years and two of his four daughters by his side.
Born in Cambridge, Mass. to Harold Lewis and Patricia (Alber) Martin on Tuesday, July 25, 1933, Ted was an Eagle Scout, a member of DeMolay International and then became a lifetime Mason. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, graduated from Northeastern University and retired as a quality control manager.
He was a dedicated member of Andrews United Methodist Church in North Syracuse, N.Y. Ted loved his train collection, golf clubs, fishing pole, the family dog, a good game of bridge and his grill, yet, most importantly his family. Upon their retirement, Ted and Joan enjoyed traveling and made the move from New Hampshire to their new home in the nearly snowless state of Virginia.
Ted is survived by his wife Joan (Kennedy) Martin, four daughters and two sons-in-law, Susan and Brian Hudson, Lynn Martin, Kris and Jonathan Kent and Cynthia Martin. He was a loving and appreciative grandfather to Tyler, Troy, Kendra, Emily, Austin and Connor. He was very proud to be great-grandfather to Jolene. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Janet Martin; sister-in-law, Marion Kennedy; and many great friends. At the end of his long struggle with cancer, he received hospice care from his family, two caring private aides and the gracious staff provided by Riverside Hospice Services. The family wishes to thank all of his caretakers as well as Dr. George Kannarkat and his kind staff.
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to the American Cancer Society or the Riverside Hospice Fund in Newport News. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date at the clubhouse of The Villas of Smithfield.
