Charles Frederick “Fred” Glanville

CARROLLTON — Charles Frederick “Fred” Glanville, 78, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018.  Born in Norfolk, Fred was preceded in death by his loving wife, Pamela Moore Glanville, his father, Charles L. Glanville and by his mother, Bess D. Glanville.  

He was a proud and loving father to David (Lisa) Glanville, Lora (David) Saunders, Peter (Carol) Glanville and Charles A. Glanville.  Fred was the grandfather to Brian and Amy Saunders, Marrena Glanville and Camryn Glanville. He is also survived by his brother, Allen (Leigh) Glanville, and his sister, Jane (John) Crotts ; a niece and nephews, along with his caretaker, Debbie Wilson.

Fred graduated from Princess Ann High School in 1958 where he wrestled and played football, afterwards attending his beloved Virginia Tech. He spent most of his career selling steel for the family business, Tidewater Steel Company.

Moving to Carrollton in 1986, he was active member at Christ Episcopal Church and a member of the Smithfield Kiwanis and Lions clubs. Fred was committed to a life of service and philanthropy for many organizations, most notably, working to establish the Isle of Wight Christian Outreach Program where he served as president for many years. Fred was also very active in the Norfolk Sports Club where he served as president.  He was a lifelong Boy Scout, attaining the rank of Eagle and earning the Silver Beaver for distinguished service to the Tidewater Council for his many fundraising activities. He also enjoyed being the Voice of the Eagle during the Boy Scout Court of Honor ceremonies.

Family and friends will gather 5-6:30 p.m., Friday, March 2, for visitation in Colonial Funeral Home.  A service celebrating Fred’s life will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, March 3, in Christ Episcopal Church, 111 South Church St., Smithfield.  His body will then be taken to Moore Family Cemetery for burial at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 4.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Tidewater Council of the Boy Scouts, 1032 Heatherwood Drive, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23455 or the Isle of Wight Christian Outreach Program, 402 Grace St., Smithfield, VA 23431
