Virginia King Barlow

Virginia King Barlow passed away on Sunday June 10, 2018 at the age of 85 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Virginia was born Feb. 5, 1933, to Horace S. King Sr. and Bessie L. King. She graduated from Surry High School in 1951 and was a member of Moore’s Swamp Baptist Church for many years where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and served as church secretary. 

Upon graduation from Longwood College (University) in 1955, with a B.S. in business education, while being active in PBLA, BSU, and BTO, she began her teaching career at Surry County School, where she loved teaching and interacting with the students for many years. Virginia’s pastimes included knitting, reading, and visiting shut-ins and elderly.

Virginia was predeceased by her parents and brother, Horace Samuel King Jr., a prominent farmer in Surry County. 

Survivors include her beloved husband of 31 years, Bernard L. Barlow; loving niece, Vicki King Parker (Chris); nephew, Christopher Samuel King (Velvet); great nephews, Christopher Shawn Parker, Philip Reese Parker; and a lovely great niece, Ann-Garland King; a very special, loving and devoted sister-in-law, Betty Ann Bryan; two special cousins, Lawrence Emory (Linda) and Evelyn E. Barlow; several other cousins, nieces, nephews as well as her specials friends, Frances B. Richardson and Thelma E. Samuel (deceased).

A funeral service will be held on Thursday June 14, 11 a.m. at Smithfield Baptist Church 100 Wainwright Dr. Smithfield. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service and a reception will follow the service in the Family Life Center. Burial will be in St. Luke’s Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Virginia’s name to the Southside Vineyard Community Church at 15343 Benn’s Church Blvd. Smithfield, VA 23430 or to the Isle of Wight Rescue Squad.
