Dr. John Wilson Ames Jr., 83, died on June 14, 2018, after a long illness. Born in Newport News, he lived in Smithfield for 72 years. He loved Smithfield and was active in the community and at Christ Episcopal Church. 

Wilson had a passion for his chosen profession of dentistry, gardening, reading and continuing education. Dr. Ames practiced dentistry for 40 years, in Smithfield and was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Warnick Ames, two step-sons, Charles Clayton Vaughan and Justin Howard Vaughan (Krystal), and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Sunday July 1, 2018, at Christ Episcopal Church in Smithfield.
