Capt. Frederick M. “Fred” Barrett III

Capt. Frederick M. “Fred” Barrett III of Smithfield, died July 15, 2018, after a short illness.  He was 86 years old.  Capt. Barrett was born and raised in Smithfield and served 40 years as a Virginia Pilot on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Capt. Fred Barrett Jr. and Nancy Cowling Barrett; sister, Anne B. Martin; son, Mitchell Barrett; daughter, Patty Williams; and son-in-law Everette Scott.  He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Helen Griffin West Barrett; children, Beth Ouellette (Jim) of Key Largo, Fla., L. Kurt Barrett of Gordonsville, Sidney Barrett of Poquoson, Luann W. Scott of Windsor and William R. West (Lois) of Smithfield; son-in-law, Wendy Williams, of Smithfield; grandchildren, Lindsey Gonzales (Pablo), Lee Ouellette, Elizabeth Scott-Francis (Adam), Van Williams (Sarah), Griffin Williams (Kayla), Eddie Nurney, Lauren West Babb (John), W. Ryan West (Ashley); eight great grandchildren; two nieces, Nancy Fortier (Dick), Susan Webb (Charlie); sisters-in-law, Audrey G. Stokes and Elizabeth Curtis.  Capt. Barrett was born in 1931, graduated from Smithfield High School and attended VMI before entering the Virginia Pilot’s Association in the apprentice program.  He retired in 1990 and for 20 years he and his wife traveled all over the U.S. and the world.  He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.  He had served on the Isle of Wight Wetlands Board, was a former president of the Kiwanis Club and a member of the German Club.  He played golf twice a week into his 80’s.  He never met a stranger and was a great friend to many in a very quiet way.  

A memorial service will be held at Little’s Funeral Home on Thursday, July 19, 4 p.m.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.  Burial will be private.  Memorial donations may be made to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P O Box 97, Smithfield VA 23431 or the IOW Christian Outreach, P O Box 253, Smithfield, VA 23431.
