Motorists are advised that Main Street in Smithfield is scheduled for closure today, Sept. 19 due to resurfacing work. There will be no on-street parking on the 100 and 200 blocks from 6 a.m. – 5 p.m. today.

The process of milling the road — removing the current surface layer in preparation for paving—started Tuesday.

Once the milling is complete, the road will be repaved with asphalt and resurfaced with a new coating of split pea gravel exposed aggregate, a process that will take up to two days, said project manager Rick Bodson.

The final surface will be the same surface that was on the road previously.

Main Street will be open Wednesday night for overnight traffic.

The street’s final completion date is uncertain, largely dependent on the weather conditions later this week. Additionally, brick crosswalks need to be reinstalled in order for the project to be finished, said Bodson.

Main Street’s resurfacing is the last street work to be completed after water, sewer, and natural gas lines were replaced last year.
