Martha Ruth Jones Wells, affectionately known as “Honey,” went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Born Jan. 17, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Samuel L. Jones Sr. and Martha Stringfield Jones. Mrs. Wells retired in 1991 from Thomas J. Lipton Company in Suffolk after 29 years of employment while she raised her family and worked diligently along beside her husband on the farm.  She was a member of Mill Swamp Baptist Church. Mrs. Wells was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend and will be missed by all who knew her. 

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Wells Sr.; son-in-law, William T. Stephenson; six sisters, and a brother. 

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Nellie Wells Stephenson; a son, Robert W. Wells Jr. and his wife, Judy; grandchildren, Jill Fitzkee and husband, Tom, Blake Stephenson and his wife, Ashley, Robbie Wells and wife, Amber, and Kim Gregory and husband, Andrew; great-grandchildren, R.J. Wells, Lauren Fitzkee, Rachel Fitzkee, Gavin Gregory, Sarah Fitzkee, Riley Gregory, Jake Wells, Hunter Stephenson, Mikayla Harris and Alya Harris; a sister, Mary Frances Byrum; a brother, James W. Jones and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held May 4 at Mill Swamp Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Mill Swamp Baptist Church, 6329 Mill Swamp Rd. Ivor, VA 23866, or Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, VA 23431. The family was served by R.W. Baker & Co.
