Dollar Tree is moving from the Smithfield Plaza shopping center to a new freestanding location.

The new, 9,984-square-foot store at 1291 Benns Church Blvd. is slated to open Aug 13.

“Dollar Tree continues to grow and we are proud to be part of the Smithfield community,” Kayleigh M. Painter, Dollar Tree’s investor and media relations manager, said in an email.

The stores offer an assortment of household products, health and beauty items, school, party and craft supplies, toys and seasonal merchandise priced at $1 or less. Painter said the new Smithfield location will also include Dollar Tree’s recently introduced Snack Zone, which is an expanded offering of beverages, candy and snacks.

In a May 14 website statement signed by Chief Executive Officer Gary Philbin that explains the company’s response to the coronavirus, he said Dollar Tree is investing $100 million in wage premiums for hourly store and distribution center employees in recognition of their dedication and customer service. The announcement also said the company plans to hire 25,000 people nationwide and invited anyone interested in a job to apply online.

Chesapeake-based Dollar Tree is a Fortune 200 company and also operates stores under the Family Dollar brand. It has more than 15,000 locations in the US and Canada.
