School board to provide COVID-19, reopening update

The Isle of Wight County School Board plans to provide an update on how COVID-19 has affected the division and present the results of a parent survey on reopening schools at 9 a.m. on July 1.

The special meeting will be in the cafeteria at Westside Elementary at 800 W. Main St., in Smithfield. Participants who wish to attend the meeting in person must wear a mask, adhere to social distancing guidelines, and enter the building through door No. 5; in-person attendance is limited. The meeting will also be live streamed through the division’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

All Isle of Wight schools and offices will be closed on July 2 and July 3 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Beginning July 6 through Aug. 20, all school offices will be open to the public by appointment only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The next regularly scheduled school board meeting is set for July 9 in the cafeteria at Westside Elementary. As with the July 1 meeting, participants who wish to attend in person must wear a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines. The meeting will be live streamed on Facebook and YouTube.

An opportunity for public comment is available at the July 9 meeting. Anyone wishing to speak should contact board clerk Tracey Reutt at treutt@iwcs.k12.va.us, or by calling 757-357-8841 before the meeting. Citizens may sign up to speak on the night of the event before the start of the meeting’s 6 p.m. open session.
