Surry County received five bids on Aug. 12 in response to its request for proposals for a 1,210-foot walking trail and park, which is to be built near the county’s public boat ramp on Gray’s Creek.
The bids range in price from $92,000 to more than $450,000. On Aug. 13, Surry’s Board of Supervisors voted unanimously with one absent to authorize the county’s staff to negotiate with the most responsive bidder, pending the vetting of bids and review by the county’s attorney. The lowest bidder, and the one county staff is recommending be awarded the contract, is Earley Contracting Corporation of Chesapeake.
Surry has received $115,000 in funding for the project from the Recreation Trails Program of the Federal Highway Administration, which is administered in Virginia by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation.
In addition to the trail, the scope of work involves constructing a pavilion with picnic tables.
No timeline has been specified yet for when the project will break ground or be completed.
