Charles Spann

Charles “Chuck” Spann, died at home on Aug. 20, 2020. He had retired from the Navy in 2002 after 34 years of service, as a captain in the Dental Corps. He served in a large variety of assignments, from the east coast to Okinawa, USS Bryce Canyon and USS Sierra, two Naval Hospitals, and he commanded the 2nd Dental Company at Camp LeJeune, N.C., and 3rd Dental Battalion, Okinawa.

After retirement, he and Sue moved to Smithfield in 2005. He became very active in his service to the community as a Master Gardener, Emeritus, a horticultural educator with Virginia Tech, and a founder of a local beekeeper association. He is survived by Sue, his loving wife of more than 53 years, and two sons, Alex and wife, Janin, of Charleston, S.C., and Kris and Heather and their son, Gabe, of Suffolk.
