Editor, The Smithfield Times:

Perhaps you heard the bells ringing at 4pm on Thursday, Sept. 17, signaling the kickoff of Constitution Week.

Our Constitution, the cornerstone of our freedoms, was written 233 years ago to protect every American from the abuse of power by the government. American colonists fought, sacrificed and died to establish and preserve the freedoms now guaranteed to us by the Constitution

Although our Daughters of the American Revolution chapter has had such fun hiding painted rocks for prizes and giving handouts at the Farmers Market on Sept. 19th, let us celebrate Constitution Week by resolving to be better informed and responsible citizens. Did you know that “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal” and “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” are not in the Constitution, but both are in the Declaration of

Independence?
