In the July meeting of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Avengers Camp #14, the camp awarded two $600 scholarships to Phillip Lee Bowden, graduate of Isle of Wight Academy, and Taylor Lee Fitchett, graduate of Smithfield High School.

Bowden, son of Phil and Julie Bowden, is attending James Madison University, majoring in sports medicine. Fitchett, daughter of Morgan and Jamie Fitchett, is attending Virginia Tech, majoring in business management.

The H.L. Hunley Award was awarded to Lt. Raven Towns, a member of the JROTC at Smithfield High School. Towns was nominated for this honor by Lt. Col. Peter Badoian, SAI, JROTC. According to Commander Badoian, Raven exemplifies honor, courage and commitment to the JROTC.
