Surry siren test Dec. 9

Published 5:30 pm Tuesday, December 8, 2020

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management, in coordination with local officials and Dominion Energy, will conduct a test of the Emergency Alert System and the early warning siren system for the Surry Nuclear Power Station at 11:10 a.m. on Dec. 9.

A steady three-minute tone will be sounded by 71 sirens in the counties of Isle of Wight, Surry, James City and York and the cities of Williamsburg and Newport News. The sirens are located with a 10-mile radius of the power station.

Siren and alert system tests take place quarterly. In the event of an actual emergency, there would be four activations of the sirens, which would sound for three minutes followed by a one minute interval of silence. Participating radio, TV, cable, satellite radio and satellite TV providers will run the emergency alert system test for approximately one minute.
