Mary Alberta “Berta” Beckner Dixon, 89, of Smithfield, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021.

She was the daughter of the late Leonard Theodore Beckner and Lucille Virginia Cash Beckner and stepfather, William P. Taylor. Mrs. Dixon was also preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Irvine Dixon. She is survived by her daughters, Debra Saunders (McClenny}, Elizabeth “Beth” Jones (Tommy) and Carol Skinner (Rhae); grandchildren, Brittany Phippins Meis and Tyler Thomas Jones; great-grandson, Maverick Dixon Meis; sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Morris (Fred) and Lena Mae Hostetter; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church, where she faithfully served on the Bereavement and Kitchen committees as well serving in the church nursery for more than 40 years. She was a member of The Eastern Star, where she served as a past Worthy Matron, and The Woman’s Club of Smithfield, where was honored as “Woman of the Year.” She was known for the top seller of their annual Smithfield Calendar. She had kind eyes and sweet smile and never met anybody she didn’t like; she accepted all challenges including health and otherwise with dignity, faith and grace. Berta will be most remembered for her love language, which was food; she was always cooking for somebody, something, or some event.
